Your questions, answered

Frequently asked questions.

A few of the things parents most often ask us. If your question isn't here, please call or message — the doctor is always happy to talk things through before you book.

What ages do you circumcise?

We specialise in religious and cultural circumcision for infant boys aged 12 months and under.

What method do you use?

We use the Plastibell ring method — the most widely used technique for infant circumcision in the UK and USA. A small plastic ring is applied and secured, and it separates on its own as healing completes.

Will it hurt my baby?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, using either a lidocaine injection or EMLA numbing cream, to keep your baby as comfortable as possible. The doctor will discuss pain relief for the days afterwards too.

Does it have to be done in a hospital?

No. Infant circumcision is a relatively minor procedure that does not require a hospital setting. In the UK it is mainly offered in private clinics like ours, in a clean, regulated environment.

How long does healing take?

The Plastibell ring usually falls off by itself between 5 and 8 days after the procedure. You'll be given full written aftercare guidance, including advice on salt baths and pain relief.

What aftercare support do I get?

You receive verbal and written aftercare instructions, a letter for your GP, a free follow-up check, and a 24-hour emergency phone line for the unlikely event of a concern in the first day.

How much does it cost?

The operation fee depends on the age of the child. Please contact us by phone or WhatsApp for current pricing and to arrange your appointment.

Is the clinic regulated and safe?

Yes. North West Circumcisions is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and procedures are performed by Dr Ahmed Abid, a GMC-registered GP, using sterile single-use instruments under aseptic conditions.

Do both parents need to consent?

Yes. Written consent is taken from both parents after a full explanation of the procedure and any potential complications, before anything proceeds.

When are your clinic days?

Clinic appointments are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at our Stretford clinic. Phone lines are open every day from 9am to 6pm for bookings and questions.

Where are you, and do families travel to you?

We're at 26 Urmston Lane, Stretford, Manchester, M32 9BP. Families come to us from across Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Stoke, Yorkshire, London, Scotland, Ireland and beyond.

Still have a question?

We're glad to help. Reach us any day between 9am and 6pm.
